A Beautiful Wedding Venue in Hackney

Wedding at Stoke Newington Town Hall from Behind the Bride and Groom

This photograph was taken from halfway down the aisle and shows some space and the oak-panelled finish of the Council Chamber.

I love Stoke Newington Town Hall for wedding photography.  The light in the Council Chamber is beautiful, with large windows on two sides.  There is ample space for your photographer to move around to photograph different angles, and the Hackney registrars are happy with this.

Bride and Groom See Each Other at Wedding in Stoke Newington

The Groom sees the Bride for the first time: Note the wide aisle and space around the couple’s chairs, which gives your photographer space to move discretely around during the ceremony.

A Different Way of Keeping Consecutive Weddings Apart

Stoke Newington seems to operate slightly differently, and some might say more oddly than at other venues:

As the wedding party arrives, the doors are locked and only opened at the correct time to allow entrance.  The party then waits in the foyer for a short time.  The officiant escorts the wedding party upstairs in small groups by lift.  Although different from the norm, this ensures that one wedding party will never meet another.

Exchange of Rings at Hackney Wedding

The exchange of wedding rings is an essential sequence of photographs to take.  At this point, the couple is usually oblivious to the photographer’s presence.

Bride and Groom Smiling after Exchange of Rings

Some happy couples show more happiness than others.  I seize the chance to photograph a moment of joy like this one.  Stoke Newington Town Hall naturally lends itself to photographic magic!

The Town Hall was built in the 1930s by the Stoke Newington Metropolitan Borough Council.  Having survived the war, it became a venue for entertainment but sadly closed and fell into disrepair in 1999.  Eleven years later and following an expensive refurbishment, it reopened as a venue for functions, meetings and weddings.  If you are planning an event, it would make a fantastic venue location.

First Kiss at Wedding

The all-important first kiss photograph: I always ask the Bride and groom to take their time on this to allow me to get ‘that shot’.  They don’t tend to object.

Wedding Photography at Stoke Newington Town Hall: Registrar Rules

The registrars at Stoke Newington are very relaxed about photography.  They are happy for your photographer to move around but don’t tend to allow photography of the schedule’s actual signing.  They set up a ‘dummy’ one instead.

Posed Photo of Signing of the Register at Wedding

The ‘dummy’ signing of the schedule: Some civil marriage registrars still orchestrate this for photographs.  I prefer photographing the real thing as it’s much more natural, but some councils don’t allow it.

Couple Walking Back Down the Aisle at Stoke Newington Town Hall

The newlyweds walk back down the aisle: A very happy sequence of wedding photographs.  I back away from the couple and shoot numerous times to catch these happy moments.

After the ceremony, the guests are taken out of a door on the left of the building for confetti, and they have time to use the front of the town hall for the group and congratulatory shots.  As the next wedding will have only just gone in, there is plenty of time for this.

Posed Wedding Couple on Ornate Staircase

The splendid main staircase is worth pausing to take beautifully wide-angle photographs like this one.

Are you holding a civil partnership ceremony, renewal of vows or baby naming?  The venue caters for these, too.

The couple exit via an alternative door for the confetti shots: Behind them, you can see the 1930s Art Deco features.

Stoke Newington Town Hall Wedding Ceremony Rooms

Council Chamber:  Walnut panelling and beautiful natural window light on two sides make this room a wonderful space for both your wedding and for your photographer to work with.  The room seats 83 for the ceremony, including an overspill to the back balcony.  The room’s unique architecture has arched mouldings above the windows and other features that accentuate the symmetry.  And photographers love symmetry!

Assembly Room:  For much larger weddings, this vast space caters to 550 guests for a standing reception or 300 for a seated.  It features a Canadian-maple sprung dance floor, perfect for wedding celebrations later into the evening.

Black and White Confetti at Wedding

This confetti photograph is 1 in a sequence of 12: As with many London wedding venues, Stoke Newington Town Hall encourages using biodegradable confetti.

Emotive congratulatory photography is always good; what an ideal backdrop for it.

Wedding Guests Admiring Bride's Ring

Another reportage shot: This time, friends admire the Bride’s ring after the ceremony.  Your photographer should always be on the lookout for shots like this.
